Adoption Planning Links/Resources:
Just adopted a dog? Congratulations! Now read this:
How wonderful! You adopted a dog! You've opened your heart and home to a new family member! Although you are filled with love and good intentions, RIGHT NOW in your new dog's eyes you are a stranger, and your home is a strange place. Trust and a loving bonded relationship develop over time. There will be enough time for hugs and kisses. TAKE IT SLOW!
- DON'T stick your face in your new dog's face and shower him with kisses
- DON'T loom/lean over your new dog
- DON'T grab your new dog's collar
- DON'T pull your new dog out from under a table; pull him off of your bed or his- let sleeping dogs lie
- DON'T bother your new dog while he is eating
- DON'T grab toys/things away from your new dog
- DO use praise, treats and positive training to strengthen your relationship with your new dog. There are many good positive training books available by Brian Kilcommons, Pat Miller, Jean Donaldson, Patricia McConnell and John Fisher. The time you take now to incorporate your new dog into your family "pack" will ensure a lifetime of happiness and a face full of big, wet doggy kisses!
