Who We Are

The Shelter Connection is the volunteer organization at The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. We supply trained volunteers as adoption advisors and dog handlers. Our main goal is to increase both the number and quality of adoptions. We also sponsor the "Mend-A-Paw" fund for special medical and surgical needs of the shelter dogs. Secondary missions of our organization include breed choice selection, responsible care information, post adoption problem solving, public awareness of shelter dog availability, and spay/neuter education.

We fight for the lives of the REAL underdogs!

Nyla - She has been waiting patiently for her person for more than a year!
Nyla is an amazing high energy dog. She needs to go home with an active person who wants a companion for running, walking or any type of exercise. At the shelter, off lead, she will run through an agility course all on her own. Yet, after an exercise session, if she has a toy to chew on, she will curl up at your feet and be content. At times, if allowed she becomes a lap dog. She is an ideal size, 40-50 pounds, and very sweet. If you are looking for an exercise companion (couch potatoes need not apply) please come meet Nyla- you'll fall in love. More...

Murphy, formerly Butch
Butch was brought to the shelter after being hit by an automobile. The long bone in his rear leg was shattered. Mend-A-Paw to the rescue. His leg was pinned and wired in an attempt to save the leg. Unfortunately it did not heal and the leg had to be amputated. Throughout this almost three month ordeal Butch remained friendly and sweet. He loved everyone and was at his happiest when someone was with him. Butch was adopted on April 12th. From Butch's Family "We have now had Murphy (a.k.a. Butch) for one week and it would not be home without him! Thank you so much Lisa for introducing Murphy to us. He is so sweet, kind, and loving. He is walking better and looking stronger each day. Everyone in the neighborhood loves him, especially the kids at the bus stop." From us "Thank you so much for giving Butch the loving home he so deserves. You have made everyone at the shelter happy."
