A volunteer oganization at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter

News and Events

It's a mother and child reunion!

Born at the shelter in December 2010, four of Mandy's puppies - and their new owners - return to the shelter  for a multi-family reunion in May.

A young, fearful shepherd mix was found abandoned on the street and brought to the shelter by a compassionate couple. They told the staff she'd been hanging
out for a few days in the same location acting as if she was waiting for
someone to come back for her.  Our shelter welcomed the anxious dog, and began to plan how to help her become adoptable, but what no one knew then was that she was expecting.  We soon found out, and Mandy got the nursery suite.  On December 5th (the birthday of one of her finders), the puppies were born.  Nurtured by Mandy and socialized by our trained volunteers, the puppies were quickly adopted out when they were old enough to be spayed/neutered and ready for a new life.

At five-months-old four of Mandy's puppies returned to the shelter with their adopted families for a puppy reunion.  They got reaquainted and romped together in our outdoor training area and even touched noses with Mama Mandy, who is making awesome strides in learning to trust people. All that's needed to make this a truly "happily ever after" story is the right, understanding home for Mandy.
