Adoptions
Adoptions are on a "first come, first served" basis on the day that the dog is available for adoption. The dogs are not guaranteed for health or temperament. The shelter will do its best to provide all available information and assistance to adopting families. In the event that an adoption does not work out the shelter will try to take the dog back based upon space availability. There will be no refund and an additional $20.00 surrender fee will be charged to process this transaction.
Redemptions
Redeeming a dog from the shelter. Lost dogs found in the Town of North Hempstead and placed in the care of the Animal Shelter are held for 10 days if the dog is licensed, and only 5 days if the dog is unlicensed. The redemption fee varies depending upon the number of times the dog has been redeemed in the past.
If a dog goes unclaimed it may be placed up for adoption.
Surrenders
Surrendering a dog at our shelter. Residents of the Town of North Hempstead may surrender a dog to the Animal Shelter for a fee of $20.00. Best efforts will be made to place healthy, sociable dogs for adoption.
Cats
Town policies and procedures regarding cats. There are no laws requiring the Animal Shelter to accept cats. Accordingly, the Animal Shelter does not do so.
