The Shelter Connection - Who We Are

The Shelter Connection is the volunteer organization at The Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. This organization supplies professionally trained volunteers as adoption advisors and dog handlers, level 1 to 4 (walkers and socializers to training assistants). We hope to better the quality of the dogs' lives by increasing adoptions through training and socialization of the dogs and public education.

New volunteers are needed and welcome!New volunteer classes are scheduled regularly. Please call (516)-626-8948 or contact us via email if you are interested.

The Shelter Connection also sponsors the "Mend-A-Paw" fund. This provides for medical and surgical needs of the shelter dogs that cannot be provided for with municipal funding.

Secondary missions of the organization are:
  • To educate adopters in breed choices and responsible care of dogs
  • To help with post adoption problem solving
  • To provide general public education about the availability of shelter dogs as well as the need to spay and neuter animals
Donations to The Shelter Connection are utilized for:
  • The "Mend-A-Paw" Fund
  • Improvements to the shelter physical plant
  • Beds for the dogs and bed repairs
  • Advertisements to help our dogs get adopted
  • Subsidizing the shelter food budget so that a better quality food can be purchased
  • Purchase of crates for the loaner program
  • Purchase of educational books for adopters fostering appropriate and responsible dog care
  • Public education about shelter dogs and spay/neuter programs
