Mend-A-Paw

Literally a life saver, the Mend-A-Paw fund was specifically established to pay for all medical and surgical needs of shelter dogs that would not be covered by the Town of North Hempstead's shelter budget. Many of these dogs would have been considered unadoptable due to health issues, some serious and some not.

Instead all have found a home. To date, the Mend-a-Paw fund has spent tens of thousands of dollars for antibiotics, diagnostic testing, a variety of surgeries and even covers routine testing for heartworm.

Stella Before (FKA Punkin')

Stella arrived as a stray at the shelter with severe trauma to her eye. After several vet consultations, it was determined that the best course of treatment would be enucleation (removal) of the eye.

Stella After

Mend-A-Paw funded the surgery and all recovery veterinary visits. She now lives in New York City with a loving new dad who massages the area every day as part of their daily routine.

Flora Before

Flora arrived at the shelter as Case #R-815 through The Shelter Connection’s rescue program. As sweet and gentle as Flora is, it was clear that she did not live an easy life before arriving at the shelter-she had no idea what a treat was and had borne many, many litters of puppies. Flora had so much excess stretched out mammary tissue hanging from her stomach area that it actually interfered with her walking and playing.

This had to be immediately addressed before we could possibly adopt her out to a new family.

Flora After

Mend-A-Paw funded the surgical removal of the excess tissue and got her into tip-top shape!

She has since been adopted into a loving family and living out her days in comfort.

Thelma and Louise (1/2)

Thelma came into the shelter with her “partner-in-crime” Louise as strays. During routine heartworm testing (also funded by the Shelter Connection), it was revealed that they both were positive for heartworm, a condition that left untreated could be fatal.
